Mother and Daughter

Medium: oil on canvas

Size: 50cm x 40cm

When I painted this my daughter was 13 and I was feeling nostalgic for when she was younger; when she used to come and ask for a hug and kiss, which at 13 she had stopped doing! That feeling of wanting to protect her, keep her safe and not let her out of my sight. Of course at 13 she was doing her own thing and didn’t really want to hang around with her embarrassing Mum anymore, but that didn’t mean that I didn’t miss those hugs and kisses. I did. Still do.

I wanted the strong colours to reflect the warmth of our bond and the composition to show us close. I used a palette knife to apply the paint thickly and to give strength to the colours and the overall affect of the picture.
