Contemplation

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size: 45 x 30 cm

Date: 1985

This is the oldest painting in the Gallery, made in 1985, when I was a 20 year old art student. I have tried to show a figure turning in on itself, contemplating emotions and thoughts. Self reflection can be a positive exercise, as long as it doesn’t slip into to self pity. At this point in my life I was definitely more in self pity mode than self help. This painting reminds me of a depressed moment in my life and that depression should be just that – a moment. It needs to be resisted and it is something I have struggled with over the intervening years. The painting also reminds me that at this point in my life I felt that I didn’t have anyone to talk to, experience has taught me that talking to people really helps to shift the grey fog of unhappiness. It doesn’t solve problems, but brings alternative points of view and helps one to come up with solutions.
