When I have been out walking or cycling, I have seen many areas in the dry season that have had a swift fire seemingly destroy everything in its path. When I have revisited the same areas, new growth has always come through. It’s not the same as before and takes a while to replace what was lost (this happens much quicker in Africa!) but eventually life regains its foothold.
This painting depicts the fire at its peak, the frantic flames and the blackened trees. It also relates to my state of mind when I painted it, a difficult period of upheaval, when old certainties were changing, being destroyed and I couldn’t see what was coming next.
