Red River

Medium: Pastel on paper

Date: 1985

I went on holiday in the summer of 1985 to Normandy in France and this is one of a few drawings I made whilst out there. I borrowed a friend’s bicycle and took a rucksack filled with far too much stuff, including art materials. I cycled around the countryside and made lots of drawings in sketch books, which I then used to make pastel drawings back at the campsite I stayed on.

A young French couple enjoyed a night of noisy passion in a tiny caravan next to where I was camped and I didn’t get much sleep. In the morning they were a little shame faced and presented me with freshly cooked crepes with syrup and coffee for breakfast. Obviously all was forgiven!
