The Castle Ramparts

Medium: Pastel on paper

Size: 60 cm x 42 cm

Date: 1985

This drawing was made when I went to Normandy, France in the summer of 1985. I borrowed a bicycle from a friend and took a rucksack. I also naively took a German ex army sleeping bag, which converted into a jacket. I foolishly thought Northern France would be warm enough to sleep out without a tent. Needless to say, after one night outside I bought a tent the next day! Which seriously cut into my budget, so I survived on bread, brie, tomatoes and oranges. The days were hot and sunny however and gave strong contrasts with colours, light and shade. This drawing was made at a local castle, whose name I now forget.
